History

Rumor indicates that a stamp club existed in the 1950's and 1960's, meeting at the Breen Hotel, now known as Germain Towers.

The modern club formed in January 1986, at the direction of Jason Wurst, who was undertaking a 4-H entrepreneur project. Details of that first meeting are available at the Stearns History Museum. Also in 1986, Jason established the Central Minnesota Philatelic Society. The latter of the two clubs disbanded in 2002. Both clubs published newsletters, though the last issue was distributed in 2002.

The first modern stamp show was held in 1987, at Radio City Music Mall in Downtown Saint Cloud. Though the club currently sponsors a show, a.k.a. GRANIPEX, other stamp shows have existed, with sponsorship by local clubs. These include...
  • CLOUDY-PEX: Annually in April, running from 1987 to 2001. The first show included cachets reading, "First Stamp Show in Saint Cloud" with a standard Saint Cloud postal cancelation.
  • CEMPEX (CEntral Minnesota Philatelic EXhibition): Annually from 1987 to 2013.
  • TRANSPEX (TRANSportation Philatelic EXhibition): Annually in July, running from 1988 to 1990. This was held in conjunction with the city's former Wheels, Wings, and Water Festival.
